Dov, “Why is it so hard for women to find a decent mentor?”
Brad Johnson, PhD, “When women enter an organization, they are often looking around for another women. ‘It would be great if I could get mentored by a senior women. Unfortunately many organization, like the ones we work for, military, finance, tech, don’t have many senior women and so looking around as a new woman, I don’t see anyone that looks like me. A few women that are there many too busy for mentoring and they don’t have time for this. There may be competition among women who are there. It becomes fierce competition for the very few spots that are going to be available for women. Senior women realize they are under the microscope, that everyone is watching them. If they take a risk on a junior woman and it doesn’t go well, it may create problems for them. So for a variety of reasons women may just not be in the mix when I’m looking for a mentor…”
